The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Environment and an aspirant in the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra State, Uche Ekwunife was Friday injured in an auto crash in Abuja.
Ekwunife was traveling alongside the Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Afamefuna Ogene, along the Abuja/Lokoja Expressway when the accident occurred. Some of their aides were also in the vehicle.
According to an eyewitness, the accident occurred while the driver was trying to avoid a head-on-collision with a fuel tanker on the road.
The Lexus in which the legislators were traveling in was said to have veered off the road, somersaulted several times before crashing into a nearby ditch. The lawmakers were rescued by men of the Federal Road Safety Corps and taken to hospital for medical attention.
In a chat with newsmen after the incident, Ekwunife said it was a miraculous survival.
“I thank God for His mercies and grace upon my life and the lives of everyone in the vehicle. Seeing the car, you will not believe that the occupants survived. But all of us are in very stable condition. I am very grateful to God for His mercies,” Ekwunife said.
On his own part, Ogene thanked God for sparing their lives, adding that only divine help could have been responsible for their survival.
The two legislators are members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, the ruling party in Anambra State.
