The military in Sokoto have confirmed that the previously unidentified gunmen it battled for over seven hours in Ungwan Gidan Dare this morning were members of Boko Haram.
The commander of the military in Sokoto State, Brig-Gen. Mohammed Tasiu Ibrahim, personally led the soldiers following a tip that the sect was living in a house in the area. In the long battle, one terrorist was killed, while another was taken alive. It is as yet unclear why it took such a long time to subdue what amounted to a force of two men, or how others may have escaped given the heavy military convergence on the area.
The soldiers however captured a number of women, two of them pregnant, and six children, and recovered six AK 47 rifles and bomb materials.
A neighbor who was freed after interrogation, described the Boko Haram as quiet people who kept to themselves.
