House wife pierces neighbour’s heart with knife during scuffle in Lagos

SATURDAY, June 22,2013, will for a long time remain indelible in the memory of Godwin Olah, 37, following an incident that claimed the life of his 28- year-old wife, Stella, during a row with a neighbour identified as Stella Omoigiafo Gilbert (31).

The suspect, a mother of one, allegedly pierced the heart of the deceased, a mother of three aged between six and three, with a knife after a scuffle in their compound.

The grieving husband of the deceased who hails from Obudu local Government Area of Cross River State, Godwin, told Crime Alert at their number 59, Ojora Street, Ajegunle, Lagos residence that the suspect also inflicted severe injuries on his wife’s hand before piercing her heart resulting to her death. Amidst tears, he narrated his ordeal since the untimely death of his wife.

His story: ”It happened that on June 22, 2013, at about 6pm, one of my sisters came calling on us. I decided to carry one small bench at the front of a neighbour’s house for the visitor to sit inside our room. Immediately, Stella, our neighbour, rushed out of her room and accosted me, asking why I should carry the bench inside. The owner of the bench, on hearing our argument, came out and asked her to let us be, but she refused, instead she went inside, brought out hot water and poured on us. I reasoned that if I engage in a fight with her, it might result to some serious consequences, so, I went to the police station at Ajaromi and reported the case.

“On getting back to the house, I saw my wife lying on the corridor in front of our room. I shook her but no response came from her, and the lady that engaged her in a fight was nowhere to be found. Hence, I went back to the station the second time to report of her death. The Police sent an officer to accompany me and see things for herself. The officer came, saw the lifeless body of my wife on the corridor and we went back to the station where she made her report.

The Police also requested that I get a report from the General Hospital here in Ajegunle. I took the body of my wife there and she was confirmed dead on arrival. There after, with the help of some good Samaritans around, I took her body to the Naval hospital mortuary, but she was rejected because we did not go with a police report. I brought her back and laid her on the floor in our room until the next morning.

Then, I went back to the police station and was given a police van to convey her to Lagos Island mortuary. She has been at the morgue for a month and three days now. Since then, our children have been sleeping at their aunt’s house, I go there every night to pass the night with them because they can’t sleep if I am not there with them.”

Crime Alert gathered from an eye witness that after the accused poured hot water on Godwin Olah and his visiting sister, his wife went to her room to accost her on why she should treat her husband and sister in-law in such manner, a fight ensued between both women and in the process, the accused tried to drag the deceased to the stove where she was cooking to burn her, but when she discovered she could not drag Stella Godwin (the deceased) to the fire, she brought out a knife and pierced through her right arm and her heart.

“Stella died as a result of the knife wound on her heart; the fight was so fierce that we all took off, returning only to see Stella Godwin lying in a pool of her blood on the corridor in front of their room,” the eye witness said.

Another neighbour also told Crime Alert on condition of anonymity that there have been a no- love -lost relationship between the two neighbours. “Before that incident, both neighbours had lived like cat and rat in this compound. They quarrelled at the slightest misunderstanding. I wish they listened to us, this would have been averted.”

Genesis: Tracing the genesis of the quarrel between his family and the suspect, the husband of the victim also said he fell out with the accused who also shared the same first name (Stella) with his deceased wife, after he prevented her from using a knife on her (the suspect) sister during a scuffle. “I have lived in this compound for 20 years now. I was here when she rented her room. We lived as good neighbours, she was best of friends with my wife. It wasl the day I stopped the lady from using a knife to inflict injuries on her sister during a fight that she saw me, my wife and our children as enemies, “ he stated.

It was gathered that the body of the deceased has been conveyed to her home town in Obudu- Akwa-Ibom state for burial; while the accused Stella Omoigiafo Gilbert was remanded in prison custody after she was arraigned at the magistrate court in Ebute Metta.

Cruel Nurse Sets 11-Yr Old Girl Ablaze in Lagos

Doctors at the General Hospital, Gbagada, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, are seriously battling to save the life of an 11-year old girl, Ita Bassey-Eno, who was allegedly set ablaze by the woman she lives with, Mrs Nkese Iroakazi, a nurse at a hospital in Surulere.

Iroakazi was alleged to have poured kerosene on Bassey-Eno before lighting a match stick to set her ablaze after the girl was said to have stolen a piece of meat from the pot.

Witnesses said the girl ran out of their apartment at 7, Adeniran Ogunsanya Street, Surulere, unto to the main road with fire all over her body as she cried for help from passers-by to rescue her.

It was gathered that someone quickly stopped his vehicle and used his fire extinguisher to put out the flame on her body.

The incident, which occurred last Saturday, was immediately reported at the Bode Thomas Police Station and the police from the station arrested Mrs. Nkese.

The little girl was rushed to the Burns and Trauma Centre, an annex of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital at the General Hospital, Gbagada, for urgent attention as the doctors in the hospital said she had suffered 95 percent burns and would take a miracle for her to survive.

Bassey-Eno’s private part was damaged, while almost all her body is burnt. The whole of her body, except her face and her feet, are bandaged, while she wears pampers because her private part was damaged.

On her hospital bed on Monday when P.M.NEWS visited, the little was groaning in pains while health officials described Nkese as callous woman and that she must be made to face the music.

Executive Director, Esther Child Rights Foundation, ECRF, Mrs. Esther Ogwu, who was at the hospital to see the girl, wept when she saw her pathetic state, saying that in all her life as human rights activist, she had never come across such a gruesome case as that of the little girl.

According to Ogwu, “the situation is terrible. The doctor said the girl suffered 95 percent burns and that her private part has been damaged. This woman is more than wicked. Justice must take its course.

“One of the health officials at the General Hospital, Gbagada called me and said a woman poured kerosene on the little girl staying with her and lit up a match stick and set her ablaze. The girl ran out of the house to the main road where a Good Samaritan used her car fire extinguisher to put out the fire.”

Little Bassey-Eno, who hails from Akwa Ibom State, southsouth Nigeria, was brought from the village with another girl, Happiness Okon-Bassey, 13, to live with Nkese in June 2013 on the premose that she would send them to school, but that was not to be as the two girls allegedly performed the function of domestic servants for Nkese.

The second house girl, Okon-Bassey, said she did not see when her colleague was set ablaze but that she heard her screaming when their mistress was beating her shortly before the she saw flame all over her body when she ran outside their home.

She alleged that they were maltreated and beaten thoroughly very often and that they had no time to rest as they work almost throughout the day for their mistress without going to school, saying that they normally eat twice daily.

Daughter of the alleged culprit, Ijeoma Akiti, 27, said she was not at home when the incident occurred and that she could not tell whether her mother poured kerosene on the little girl’s body and set her ablaze, but that she heard such story at the police station.

She said her mother was first married to her father and later remarried into the family of Iroakazi and that her mother’s husband had gone on a business trip to the eastern part of Nigeria.

At the Bode Thomas Police Station, police sources alleged that the little girl confessed that her mistress poured kerosene on her. The police at the station said the woman would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Panti for further investigation into the matter, but Ogwu alleged that the police were trying to shield the woman from prosecution.

In her statement at the police station, Iroakazi denied that she poured kerosene on the little girl’s body and set her ablaze.

According to her, she was in the sitting room when she heard a loud cry and rushed out only to see the girl on fire and called on people to help put out the fire.

Officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, WAPA, were at the hospital and the police station where they spoke with the woman, but she denied the story.

WAPA officials took Okon-Bassey, the second girl with them for rehabilitation pending when she would be reconciled with her real mother

ASUU strike: Please, “bear with us,” FG appeals to students, parents

The Federal Government has appealed to university students and their parents to be patient as negotiations are ongoing with striking university lecturers.

Briefing journalists after the weekly meeting of the Executive Council of the Federation, FEC, the Information Minister, Labaran Maku, said government was worried because the disruption of the university calendar comes at a social cost to government.

“We are appealing to our people, particularly parents and children of this nation, to bear with us, to show more understanding and we pray that this type of strike will not reoccur; because the public school system suffers a lot of damage with the perennial strikes,” Mr. Maku said.“We don’t want school calendars to be disrupted and a lot of series discussions have been going on and we believe we should record some progress soon enough for these schools to open,” he said.

Mr. Maku noted that universities have been relatively stable since the advent of the Jonathan administration, as in the last two years “there has not been a lot of strikes until this unfortunate one and I believe we will overcome it and in the end both parties will appreciate the need to keep the school calendar stable for the progress of our country.”

An Osogbo Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday remanded Ezekiel Adenipekun, 18, for allegedly killing his mother with a machete.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Wilson Meriti, told the court that the accused committed the offence on July 21 at about 3p.m. at Irojo area of Ilesha, Osun.

OSuspects confirm involvement in major operations

The Nigerian Army on Monday paraded 42 suspected Boko Haram members arrested in different parts of Lagos and Ogun States.

They were said to have fled the ongoing military intervention in some parts of the north and were arrested between July 12 and 23.

Parading the suspects at the headquarters of 81 Division, the General Officer Commanding, GOC, Gen. Obi Umahi said the organised raid, was done in conjunction with intelligence operatives.

The suspects were said to be planning to unleash terror in parts of the South West, including 81 Division’s area of operations.

Umahi said at interrogation, the suspects who were arrested at different intervals gave useful information that led to the clamping down on others.

The GOC reiterated security agencies’ determination to rid the country of terrorists, adding that the suspects will be handed over to relevant agencies.

He however refused to disclose if weapons were recovered during the raid, “The Boko Haram trickling influx is adduced to their plan to unleash terror in some parts of the South West.”

AGAIN AND AGAIN******* 30+ die in Sabon Gari, Kano bomb blasts

No fewer than 20 persons were believed to have been killed in Sabon Gari area of Kano on Monday as suspected terrorists detonated about four bombs in the neighbourhood. It was learnt that one of the explosions, believed to have been carried out by Islamic sect, Boko Haram, occurred at a drinking joint in Sabon Gari, where most of the non-indigenes reside.

The blasts occurred on Igbo Road, Enugu Road and New Road, opposite Ado Bayero Square. The first blast was said to have occurred at about 9.12pm near International Hotel, while the second blast followed three minutes later. Security forces immediately condoned off both sites, which prevented people from moving closer to the places hit by the explosions.

A resident of the area, who spoke to one of our correspondents on the telephone, said there were series of explosions, which had created pandemonium in the commercial area of the state capital.

The resident, who craved anonymity, said the explosions were still ongoing as of 10pm, adding that there had been at least two explosions before the latest one at about 9.30pm. It was difficult to ascertain the number of casualties of the explosions but Channels TV, in its 10pm news report, said about 20 people had been killed.

AFP reports that “at least four explosions” had occurred in the Sabon Gari neighbourhood on Monday. “There is confusion all over the place. There were four huge explosions, so huge that they shook the whole area. Everywhere is enveloped in smoke and dust,” Chinyere Madu, a fruit vendor, told AFP.

Kola Oyebanji, a resident of the neighbourhood, believed “beer parlours” were the target. He said, “My house is not far from there. All my windows are shattered.” The cause of the blasts was not immediately clear. The spokesman for the Joint Task Force, Captain Ikedichi Iweh, confirmed the explosions but refused to give details. Boko Haram had claimed responsibility for coordinated suicide blasts at a bus park in Sabon Gari in March that killed over 22 people.

Boko Haram Islamists kill 20 civilians in Borno

Suspected members of Nigeria’s Islamist group Boko Haram shot dead more than 20 civilians when a vigilante group attacked them in the northern Borno state, a military spokesman said Sunday.

“The suspected sect members came armed and fired sporadic shots that killed over twenty innocent civilians,” Haruna Mohammed Sani, spokesman for the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) said.

The violence took place on Saturday in Dawashe village, the army lieutenant said in a statement.

He said men from the Civilian Joint Task Force, a vigilante group formed in Boko Haram’s bastion Maiduguri to combat the Islamist gunmen who have been terrorising the region for years, entered Dawashe to search for suspects.

Suspected Boko Haram members subsequently opened fire in the village, the spokesman said, adding that the 20 victims were mostly fishermen and traders.

Sani said a dozen other civilians sustained gunshot wounds during the incident but provided no information on casualties among the belligerents.

The toll and circumstances of the incident could not immediately be verified independently.

The MNJTF, a joint military force set up in 1998 to combat border crimes, consists of troops from Nigeria, Chad and Niger.

Its mandate was recently expanded to fight Boko Haram, whose insurgency is estimated to have cost 3,600 lives since 2009, including killings by security forces.

Marijuana Smoker drowns while evading police arrest in Delta

A yet-to-be-identified middle-aged man has drowned while allegedly evading police arrest during a raid on an Indian hemp smoking joint in Ashaka, Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State.

It was gathered that the police, acting on a tip-off that smokers converged on the spot to indulge in the unwholesome act, consequently swooped on them.

But on sighting the police, the alleged smokers whose number could not be ascertained, dispersed to avoid being arrested. Sources told Daily Sun that policemen gave the suspects a hot chase and while closing-in on the middle-aged man, he allegedly jumped into the river and drowned, apparently due to lack of ability to swim. The situation, however, caused a stir in the area as a mob of about 200 persons stormed Ashaka Police Station, throwing stones at the building and policemen on duty.

The mob action allegedly led to the destruction of windows and the charge room while the rear glasses of patrol vehicles of Ashaka and Aboh police divisions parked at the premises were shattered. It took combined efforts of Dragon 24, 25 and 26 patrol teams in synergy with military officials from Agip Oil Company to bring the chaotic situation under control

Miracle Alert, Bible Remained Intact After Car Burnt To Ashes In Abuja

Miracles are experiencing occurrences which spontaneously raise the conviction of believers and their devotion to spirituality across all faiths. One of such phenomena occurred in Abuja, last Saturday, when a Bible remained untouched by flames from a car that burnt into ashes.

The car, driven by one Jeremiah Giwa, who arrived the country from United Kingdom about five months ago after completing his tertiary education, swerved off the road, tumbled and eventually landed in a ditch, exploding in flames. Jeremiah narrates his account of the event.

“My younger brother, Joshua and I were going to pick our parents and elder brother from the airport, so we had an accident on the way at the road before Galadimawa. We were coming from our home in the Games Village. The car was very fine and it hadn’t developed any fault before.

That morning, it was raining and the car began to swerve off the road. I tried to bring the car back on the road but the break was not holding anymore. I tried ceaselessly and Ilater lost control of the car. The car eventually tumbled twice after moving zigzag on the road and landed in a ditch.

I have been driving close to five years and I was very okay when I drove the car. “When ithappened, we immediately unhooked our seat-belts; I talked to my brother for a few seconds to ensure he was okay. We unhooked the belts; thank God it wasn’t jammed.

We tried to open the driver’s door but the door was jammed. We tried to break the glass too, it refused to break. We managed to spot one of the windows at the back; we broke it and climbed out through it, under one of the chairs. We went far away from thecar to ensure our safety because the car was already in flames.

The two of us were the only occupants of thecar and my brother was sitting beside me in front. We were so shocked that we both came out unscathed.
“We watched the car go up in flames while other drivers initially drove past us. It was about a few minutes before 6am; so it was still a bit dark.

By the time people began to stop, everything had burnt beyond recognition. Toour surprise, the early morning rain which wethought could help save the car also stoppedimmediately the car was completely gutted by the fire. Sympathizers didn’t even know we owned the car.

They all ran past us to see the burning car. They were wondering if people were still there and all that. “By the time my parents and elder brother were aware of the incident, they all cried, but I think it was for joy. Initially, when my dad was aware of it, he wasn’t happy that we were coming to pick them.

We had intended to give them a surprise lift from the airport. But, when we took our dad to the scene of the accident, he couldn’t talk anymore.
He was in tears. The car wasn’t the reason he cried. I guess he was just surprised and was grateful to God as to how we manage to come out unscathed and how the bible was not touched by fire.

Child marriage, Kenyan Man jailed 20 years for marrying 14-year old girl

At a time when the news of underage marriage is front, right and centre in the Nigerian media and public consciousness, the Court of Appeal in Kenya confirmed on Friday, a 20-year jail sentence handed to a man who “married” a 14-year-old girl in 2010.

In 2010, the man, Ezekiel Sonkoyo was found guilty of defiling the Form One student by a Kilgoris court and he has been appealing since then, but on Friday, he lost his second and final appeal seeking to quash the sentence.

In fact, Sokonyo’s case was more chilling because he took the girl who was a student at Siria Secondary School from her home on August 17, 2010 to Eldoret, without the consent of her parents. When the father of the girl traced his daughter two months later, she was found living with Sokonyo as his wife. Then he defended himself by saying that although he knew her real age, he had sexual relations with her because he intended to marry her.

However, Lady Justice Ruth Sitati, who heard the first appeal, quoted the Sexual Offences Act, saying, given her age, the girl could not legally give consent. Justice Sitati upheld the sentence of 20 years given by the magistrate’s court in January last year.

Not satisfied, he moved to the Court of Appeal sitting in Kisumu and which constituted of Justices Onyango Otieno, Festus Azangalala and Sankale ole Kantai. Again, the judges upheld the ruling of the lower courts.

Pastors daughter who was alleged to be forced into Islam speaks out, Nobody Forced Me To Accept Islam

The pastor’s daughter at the centre of a row between Nigeria’s umbrella Christian and Muslim groups has broken her silence, debunking claims by her father and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) that she was abducted and converted by force.

The conversion of 24 years old Miss Charity (now renamed Aisha) Uzoechina, daughter of Pastor Raymond Uzoechina of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has been a subject of controversy, wth the father and CAN accusing the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, of abducting and forcibly converting her to Islam. The Etsu Nupe and the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) have, however, insisted that she converted voluntarily and sought refuge in the Etsu Nupe’s Bida palace in Niger State out of fear of her father.

Clearing the air on the saga, Charity (Aisha) said in an interview with the Abuja-based Weekly Trust published this morning: “I was formerly known as Charity Uzoechina and now A’isha Uzoechina. I changed my name because I have accepted Islam. I joined Islam on my own. Nobody enticed me with anything to join Islam.

“I converted to Islam because I love the character of Muslims, particularly the way they behave. You know Muslims believe in God. I have Muslim friends and I watch what they do, that enticed me to join Islam. I used to read Qur’an when I was a Christian. I always join them to read Qur’an and through that I found out that it is the same one God they worship. So I embraced Islam.”

The Bida Sharia Court 1 is expected to rule next Thursday, August 1, on whether or not Charity (Aisha), a student of Federal Polytechnic, Bida, should be released to her parents. The Bida Sharia Court had earlier ruled that she should remain in the custody of the traditional ruler (the Etsu Nupe) but Pastor Uzoechina promptly lodged an appeal, insisting that it is wrong to try a case involving a Christian in a Muslim Sharia Court. Talking to boys a sin, as Turkish Girl is Buried Alive For Talking To Boys

The body of a 16-year-old girl who police say was buried alive by relatives in an "honor" killing carried out as punishment for talking to boys has been discovered in Kahta, Turkey.

Turkish police discovered the body after acting on an anonymous tip. The tipster told police that the girl was killed after a family council meeting, and had been buried under a chicken pen. Police say that the girl had complained two months earlier that her grandfather beat her for talking to boys.

The girl, identified by police only by her initials M.M., was said to have a large amount of soil in her stomach and lungs, indicating she had been buried alive.

"The autopsy result is blood-curdling. According to our findings, the girl - who had no bruises on her body and no sign of narcotics or poison in her blood - was alive and fully conscious when she was buried," one anonymous expert said.

The girl had been reported as missing by her family. Police have arrested her father, mother and grandfather. Her mother has been released but her father and grandfather are awaiting trial.

The case is expected to bring further attention to the issue of "honor" killings in Turkey. Official figures indicate that more than 200 "honor" killings take place each year - almost half of all murders in Turkey

Education , private university owners, the cause of ASUU strike

The decay in our education system is causing us too much, as we can't have a complete session of academic activity without different forms of labour actions from the unions of lecturers or non academic staffs, which always aims at the government for its failures.

ASUU the body which regulates university lecturers is the champion of This constant actions that yield no fruit. The are currently on one demanding implementation of the agreement reached at the one they had two sessions ago and which brings us to the table of the government.

The government have void to underdevelop our dear country by making sure our public education system is killed so that some government billionaires will capitalize on it to sell it off to themselves and to there god fathers. This people who also have intrest in most if not all of our private institutions are killing the institutions that our founding fathers Zik, Awolowo, Amadu Bello and their mates struggled to build hoping that they will help project us into leadership in the world .

Now the struggle to kill the university education which is ongoing after they have killed our primary and secondary school system and left it to us that for our children to have good education we have to pay amount that sound like what one uses to process visa and even pay for flight, just for a term.
We remember that Chinua Achebe, Chukwuemeka Ojukwu( whose father was a Multi millionaire ) went through our public school system and even Wolw Soyinka and many more too.

Now that primary education and it senior brother secondary have been killed, they now have sworn to take over universities. And now leaving us at the mercy of private, their privately owned universities. That is why they have failed to regulate them, both in standard and in the amount of money they collect from parents who struggle to give our dear country a future by training there children in this universities.
Today we have universities that kill parents with high blood pressure, by incresing the fees paid as they feel after all they know that the only alternative you have is public schools that are on strike.  We all as Nigerians need to come together and in one voice say no to this crime against humanity. Because if education us a fundamental issue to us, to deprive us of it is a crime that needs to be stopped now.
