Obasanjo may dump PDP, as he declares "2015' It does not matter where I put my gear"

FORMER President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has declared that his interest in the unity and peace of Nigeria as a country transcends the boundaries of any political party.

Obasanjo made this statement while speaking at the 50th anniversary of Aare Afe Babalola’s call to the Nigerian bar.

Obasanjo, who was reacting to banter from Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi asking him to be a neutral player in Nigerian politics said “It does not matter where I put my gear, what matters to me is the interest of Nigeria and nothing can take that away from me.”

It all started at the commissioning of Afe Babalola & Co Head Office extension, opposite Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan.

The commissioning train including Obasanjo which had gone on an inspection tour of the newly commissioned chamber had just returned from the trip when Governor Ajimobi and his Ekiti State counterpart, Dr Kayode Fayemi arrived. Their late entry denied them seats and when it seemed there was no seat to occupy, the former president jokingly asked if the two governors could seat on his laps.

Both promptly sat on Obasanjo’s laps while the former president retorted: “APC is watching you.”

When the team got to the NBA hall, venue of the lecture, Governor Ajimobi in his characteristic manner described Obasanjo as a father to all, stating that the former president has committed another blunder by allowing him and Fayemi to sit on his laps, confirming that Obasanjo will join them at APC.

In his remarks, Dr Fayemi restated that the incident confirmed his advise in a  discussion with Obasanjo to be a father of all and be non-partisan so that all politicians can come to him should they run into trouble, with the hope of getting fair judgment.

Chief Obasanjo who was chairman on the occasion literarily christened himself ‘a bundle of blunders’ whom many people will want to emulate.

“Some people call me general of blunders; if I commit blunder and successfully ended the civil war, that is good; if I blundered and I monitored transition from military to civilian; if I blundered and after 20 years and spending three years in prison I was persuaded to come and contest the election, great blunder; spending eight years as Nigeria’s president is another great blunder,” he said.

Obasanjo also admitted to some ‘mistakes’ which he considered as success stories today. Topping the list was his choice of the celebrant, Aare Afe Babalola as the Pro Chancellor University of Lagos. He said “I was looking for somebody to fill the position of the UNILAG pro-chancellor, and I picked Afe Babalola and some people said it was a mistake.

“I made a great mistake in appointing him, but today I have the opportunity to say it was a successful mistake. It was unfortunate that people go through life without making any impact, but when Afe took over as the pro-chancellor, what happened was mistake upon mistakes.”

He said the first mistake was that the institution became number one in the country, and the Vice-Chancellor became the best in Nigeria. The former president added that Babalola also became the best Pro-Chancellor, and the mother of all the mistakes was as a result of Afe’s exposure and involvement as pro-chancellor, he established Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUA).

“Afe used the opportunity he had as pro-chancellor of UNILAG to build one of the best and a model university in Nigeria. If you want to compile the mistakes I made in life that would be another mistake.”

While delivering the anniversary lecture entitled: “The Future of Law in Nigeria,” former chairman of Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Justice Emmanuel Ayoola warned that Nigeria can only attain greatness with great legal system.

He said the path to the greatness of the nation was through a reliable, efficient, trustworthy and value-driven legal system.

“We deceive ourselves with the notion that our legal system is as healthy as it should be and delude ourselves that we can be a great nation without a great legal system,” Ayoola said.

In his goodwill message, President Goodluck Jonathan, who was represented by the Solicitor General of the Federation, Mr Abdulahi Ahmed Gulag, described Afe as one of the greatest legal icons Nigeria has ever produced, adding that he deserved to be celebrated because he has lived a life of dogged determination.

“He is a man of humility and uncommon generosity. He has served Nigeria well and has continued to uphold its image. He has remained a pillar of support for true democracy and has also established a legacy for sustainable education with the establishment of  Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti(ABUAD).”

Also in his remark, the Oyo State Governor, Senator described Aare Babalola as the father of the nation, and an epitome of excellence.

Ekiti State Governor, Dr Fayemi said Afe represents the best of Ekiti people, stressing that he is a workaholic who always protect the interest of the masses.

“The grace that God has given him is worthy of celebration, he taught us what humility and brilliance with hard work was, he teaches core value to a successful life. He is a pathfinder and has perfected so many lives.”

Also in his tribute, Ondo State Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko said:” We are here to celebrate one of Nigeria’s best who stood for true justice. We are proud of his accomplishments and exemplary lifestyle. You have made a great mark in your profession and also contributed immensely to the rule of law in Nigeria.”

Other dignitaries present at the event include, Minister of Police Affairs, Mr Caleb Olubolade; former Governor of Ekiti State, Segun Oni; former President of World Court, Prince Bola Ajibola; an industrialist, Chief Jimoh Ibrahim; Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III; Olugbo of Ugboland, Oba Fredrick Obateru Akinruntan; the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adejugbe Aladesanmi; the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, Alhaji Ado Ibraheem; retired justice of the Court of Appeal, Justice Moronkeji Omolaja.

Senior Advocates of Nigeria present are: Wole Olanipekun, Akin Olujimi, Folake Solanke, Gboyega Awolomo, Yusuff Alli, among others.

JTF arrests monarch, others for Crude oil theft

From Femi Folaranmi, Yenagoa

The Joint Task Force (JTF) Operation Pulo Shield has arrested a traditional ruler and three others in Bayelsa State, in connection with alleged stealing of 2,000 metric tons of crude oil using an unlicensed vessel.

Checks indicated that the vessel was intercepted along the Akassa waterways in Brass local government area of the state.

Intelligence officers in the Central Naval Command, Yenagoa and the JTF had identified the waterways and creeks of Brass as a notorious place for illegal oil bunkering.

According to a reliable security source, after preliminary investigation by JTF officers who immediately impounded the vessel and arrested the crew members, the name of the traditional ruler featured as their main sponsor.

After due consultation with its headquarters, the traditional ruler was picked up and grilled by intelligence officers of the military outfit.

Investigations revealed that the JTF had been on the trail of the suspected vessel following information that she was involved in illegal oil bunkering.

“We discovered that the boys came under the cover of the night and siphoned crude oil from the oil pipelines along the Brass-Sagana River in Akassa area.

We have discovered that some of these traditional rulers and community heads provide cover and funding for the activities of these oil thieves in Bayelsa. We have started a series of collaboration with communities but we will not spare those directly involved in the illicit trade” the source said.

Meanwhile the Civil Liberty Organization and the Ijaw Peoples Development Initiatives (IPDI) have disagreed with Governor Henry Seriake Dickson over his position on the proliferation of arms in Bayelsa state and the Niger Delta region.

The Chairman of the CLO in the state, Chief Nengi James charged security agencies to pay close attention to top Nigerians that sponsor illegal oil bunkering.

Also, the coordinator of the IPDI, Austin Ozobo,   said   of local refinery  operators should be given legal backing and encourage, to improve the qualities of their operation and provide thousands of job for jobless youths in the country.

Terrorism: Life jail for 4 Boko Haram bombers

    •Another gets 10 years

From GODWIN TSA Abuja

In the first landmark judgment under the Terrorism Act, a Federal High Court in Abuja yesterday jailed four Boko Haram bombers for life while another got a 10-year imprisonment. The convicted Islamist sect members were arraigned for their involvement in the bombing of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Suleja, Niger State in 2011.

One of the accused, Musa Adam, was however, set free by Justice Bilikisu Aliyu for want of evidence linking him with the crime. Those convicted on three of the five-count charge are Shuaibu Abubakar, Salisu Ahmed, Umar Babagana-Umar, Mohammed Ali and Umar Ibrahim who bagged 10 years jail term.

Justice Aliyu, however, discharged the convicts on the charge relating to the explosions at the All Christians Fellowship and the killing of policemen in Dakina, on the ground that the prosecution failed to provide convincing evidence to support the charge.

They were arraigned on a five-count charge  on April 8, 2011 for the bombing, in which 16 people died and several others injured. They were also charged with the July 10, 2011 explosions at the All Christians Fellowship, Suleja,  which claimed three lives and injured others; the March 3, 2011 explosion at a political rally in Suleja, where three people died; and the May 23, 2011 explosion in Dakina Village, Bwuari, Abuja, killing three policemen.

The accused were equally charged with engaging in illegal training in weapon-handling and unlawful possession of weapons for the purpose of engaging in terrorism. The convicts were charged under Section 15(2) and (3) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Act.

In relation to the four who bagged life sentences, Justice Aliyu noted that they “used explosives meant for blasting rocks for mining purposes, to kill human beings who had done nothing against them. “Human life is sacred. There is no human life that is more sacred than the other. The convicts have shown lack of respect for human life. They deserved to be removed from the society,” the judge held before pronouncing the sentence.

For Ibrahim, who got 10 years, the judge said that the evidence led by the prosecution showed that he merely served as an errand boy for others, who engaged in illegal weapon-training. Justice Aliyu held that Ibrahim was culpable for aiding the illegal trainees as he could have refused to run errands for them if he did not support their activities.

Incest: Dad Rapes 2 Daughters For 2 Years.

A 35-year old bus driver, Adewale Adeleke has been arrested by the police for defiling his two daughters. The little girls alleged that their father has been having sex with them for two years.

The incident occurred in Ikotun, Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos, southwest Nigeria.

Adeleke was arrested and detained at the Ikotun Police Station over the act.

His two daughters, who were in tears, confessed that their father had been sleeping with them since 2011 without the knowledge of their mother who separated from their father last year.

The girls are 13 and 10 years old. The eldest of them (name withheld) alleged that their father started sleeping with her when she was 11 years and her sibling when she was eight years old and that it was her father who deflowered her.

•The suspected rapist, Adewale Adeleke

“Our father sleeps with us frequently. The first time he slept with me, I saw blood coming out of my private part and he used singlet to clean me up,” she alleged.

The two girls are now under police protection while their father will be arraigned at the Ejigbo Magistrate’s Court later today by the police.

The act was exposed when the Vice Chairman, Freelance Broadcast Association of Nigeria, Lagos State chapter, Demola Olota, Mrs Esther Ogwu of the Esther Child Rights Foundation and Mrs Mary Olasupo of the Compassionate Women arrested the alleged culprit and handed him over to the police.

It was gathered that Adeleke allegedly admitted that he had been defiling his daughters since 2011 and that he should be forgiven.

He was quoted as saying that the devil pushed him to have sex with them and that whenever he felt the urge for sex, he defiled his daughters.

Mother of the children, Kemi Adeleke, who left her husband last year to Ibadan, Oyo State was shattered when the news that her estranged husband had been sleeping with their children was broken to her, saying she could not eat for two days.

Kemi said she left her husband because he was an irresponsible man.

She said she is the one that feeds the family and even on top of that she gets seriously beaten up by her husband.

According to her, when she left for Ibadan, she left the children with her mother but her husband went there to bring them back home.

Executive Director, Esther Child Rights Foundation, Mrs. Esther Ogwu, described the man as wicked for defiling his two girls for two years, saying that her foundation would ensure that justice is done in the matter.

She stated that when she interviewed Adeleke at the police station, he admitted to the act, adding that the foundation was trying to see if the children’s mother could take custody of the children when she arrives from Ibadan

When contacted, Lagos State Police Command, Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Ngozi Braide confirmed the arrest of the suspect, saying that he would be arraigned in court soon.

As I walked away, I wondered if that guy wasn't constructively unemployed.

The Trouble with Handsome Guys By Opeyemi Akande

The door of the room burst open, Titi my roommate ran in all tear-faced and crying,
“What’s up, are you okay?” I asked as she collapsed on the bed. “Why are you crying?” I asked, as I dropped the novel I had been reading on my bed and walked to her.
“It’s Michael again!” she spat. Michael again! I thought as I sat down next to her waiting to hear the rest of the story. Michael or ‘malware’ as I liked to call him, in my mind was the worm that had completely taken over my roommate’s heart and had caused her so much pain, in my opinion, since they started dating. While I waited for her to tell me all about it I began imagining what Michael could have done this time as different scenarios messed around in my head, the same way it does with Ally in the Ally McBeal Show . First I saw him turning into a monster right beside Titi, just like Michael Jackson in the Thriller video, and then I saw him again at the back of the school cafeteria engaging in a smooch fest with one of his female course mates. I came back to reality from my daydream and heard Titi speak. “I saw him with a girl in his room and they were…” She couldn’t finish the sentence and I couldn’t speak the words on my lips which were, I told you so. This wasn’t the first time Titi had caught her boyfriend with another lady but she never learns and I don’t know what to do with her.

Michael the ‘malware’ was a 4th year law student in the university while my roommate and I were in our 2nd year studying Mass Communication. Malicious software, also known as malware is software designed to deliberately harm your computer. I call Michael a malware because I believe his purpose with respect to girls on campus is never good. His reputation as a playboy is well known and my roomie has a thing for handsome playboys that I just do not understand. Malicious software can come in form of a worm (program) that can make it possible for a malicious user to take over your computer and cause your computer, network or server to stop responding. Okay, so Michael has this smile and it just worms its way up to your heart and if your heart does not have an updated anti-virus software or a firewall that prevents hackers from gaining access into it, then you are vulnerable to attack. “I’ll never have anything to do with him again its over between us”, she said in between sobs bringing me out of my reverie. This is the final straw, I’ve broken up with him, I’m getting my life back on track and I’m no longer wasting my tears on him, he’s not worth it.”

I watched as she got up from the bed and began changing her clothes. I was happy for her; at last this girl was finally acting or at least talking like she has some sense, I thought. Maybe someone somewhere has helped install an anti-spyware or antivirus software that got rid of whatever virus or worm Michael must have put in her heart.

However my happiness for her was to be short-lived as three weeks later my roomie told me that she had gotten back together with Michael a week after the break up and that she felt guilty for not telling me earlier. I may not be an expert on relationships but I know that guys who find it difficult to discipline themselves when it comes to women, money and wine can never make a good girl happy. Michael sure lacks control when it comes to these three things. My roomie was just too good to be falling for this type of guy.
“Are you sure about what you are doing?” I asked her. “You know this is not the first time Michael cheated on you neither is it the second. He does it always and everybody on campus knows about his escapades. Besides he is not a Christian like you and the bible says that we should not be unequally yoked with an unbeliever. Titi this guy will just continue to break your heart. Do you really want to live like that?”

My roomie was mad.

“Please don’t go scriptural on me because I know what I’m doing” she said. “I love Michael and I know he loves me too. He just has a problem with ladies as they always come after him because he’s rich, handsome and one of the most popular guys in school. He loves me and only me and he has promised that he’ll never cheat on me again. Besides the same Bible says that love is patient and kind, keeps no record of when it has been wronged, never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful and endures through all circumstances. I love him and I’m ready to stand by him through this trying time. Thanks for your advice anyway, I believe I have a class to attend.” With that she walked out of the room and if she had turned around, she would have seen my gaping mouth.

If there’s something I’ve come to learn in this campus, it’s that girls who are in relationships with undeserving guys always have a problem getting out of it and they always believe it is their duty to keep the relationships going. They allow these guys ease of access into their lives and bodies and they always find it difficult to let go.

My roommate has foolishly uninstalled her firewall and has allowed this malicious software into her heart to take over and cause her to gradually stop responding to the voice of reason.

Like a friend would say “Beware of handsome guys (worms) they can be quite slippery!” Hmmn!

Fulani herdsmen kill 34 in Benue

MAKURDI— few hours after the invasion of Nzorov ward in Iyordye Akaahena village by Fulani herdsmen left scores dead, the marauders, yesterday, attacked Akuroko village in Guma Local Government Area, leaving about 34 dead.
According to sources, “they came from neighboring Nasarawa State, this (yesterday) morning in their numbers as usual, armed with sophisticated weapons and invaded Akuroko village. They were shooting and burning any structure in sight.

“A lot of people have been displaced, some killed, many injured and lots more are currently missing. But I cannot tell you the exact figure of those that may have been killed until we are able to know the condition of people.

“But for now I can say that about 34 persons have lost their lives in this attack with many sustaining serious injuries.

“In fact, our major worry is the threat by the invaders that they would continue to invade our communities until they take over Gbajimba, the local government headquarters.

“We are disturbed because it seemed the police in Gbajimba have been overwhelmed by the persistent attacks on communities in Guma Local Government Area. From all indications, no where is safe anymore in the area.”

Chairman of Guma Local Government, Mr. Frank Adii, confirmed the attack to Vanguard.

He said: “As I speak to you, fighting is still raging in that village which has recorded about 10 deaths, while others who sustained injuries are currently receiving treatment at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital.”

The Chairman who said he had already contacted the Commandant of the Nigerian Army Airborne Brigade, Makurdi, for assistance regretted that the Police in Gbajimba seemed helpless.

When contacted, Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Deputy Superintendent Daniel Ezeala, said he was yet to be briefed on the latest crisis in Guma council.

Former Benue State Head of Service, Mike Iyordye, whose house was burnt down in Friday’s attack, confirmed the latest attack, but regretted that he could ascertain the level of killings and destruction in Akuroko because of the terrible condition of the leading to the village from Makurdi. VANGUARD

NFF suspends clubs indefinitely for loosing 79-0 and 67-0

The Nigeria Football Federation has placed an indefinite suspension on the four clubs involved in scandalous score-lines during promotion play-offs in the Nigeria Nationwide League, the lowest tier of the domestic league.

In a mind-boggling show, never previously witnessed in Nigeria football, Plateau United Feeders somehow manufactured a 79-0 victory over Akurba FC while Police Machine FC demolished Babayaro FC 67-0. All teams were involved in promotion play-offs in which the winners would qualify to play in Nigeria Nationwide League Division 3.
The Chairman of the NFF Organising Committee, Mike Umeh, who is also NFF 1st Vice President, was alarmed when informed and promptly directed that the four teams at the centre of the scandal be grounded, pending further sanctions on all involved.

“It is unacceptable. This is a scandal of huge proportions. The four teams involved are suspended immediately and indefinitely, pending further sanctions. We will investigate this matter thoroughly and get to the bottom of it,” Umeh said on Tuesday.

NFF’s Director of Competitions, Mohammed Sanusi, assured that the Organising Committee would mete out severe sanctions on all persons and institutions indicted by the investigation.

“For now, that centre is suspended. The teams involved, their players and officials, match officials, coordinator and anyone found to have played some role in this despicable matter would be severely dealt with,” Mr. Sanusi said.

A group of men got out of the car and opened fire, killing two of the men in the Golf instantly. A third passenger tried to run away, but collapsed and died a few metres from the scene. A fourth man died later in hospital. The fifth man in the car was not hurt.

“The motive behind the shooting is unknown. Police are still investigating,” Masilela said. Last Saturday, three Nigerians were killed in a cell phone shop in Voortrekker Street, Benoni.

They were inside the shop when five armed men entered around 6 p.m., police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini said at the time.

The five opened fire, killing two of the customers, both 38, inside the shop, and the third man, 40, at the shop door. The gunmen fled in a green BMW. They were also believed to be Nigerians, said Dlamini.

He said the police found spent cartridges at the scene, and a licensed firearm belonging to one of the men who died. Nothing was stolen.

“The motive for the killing is still unknown but a possibility that the victims were a rival group is being investigated,” he said.

Why I want to govern Anambra again –Ngige

From GEOFFREY ANYANWU, Awka

Former Governor of Anambra State and Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Dr. Chris Ngige, has said his remaining in politics and vying for the governorship of the state in the forthcoming gubernatorial election in the state, is to enable him uplift the people and give them a sense of belonging.

Ngige, who is a frontline governorship aspirant, leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and the new All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-East, said being governor or Senator was no longer a big deal for him but that he was interested in the welfare of the people and development of the state.

Addressing members of his federal constituency, Idemili North and South, during a thank you meeting at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Nkpor, Ngige said: “There is no big deal about being a governor any longer; I have been one before.

My only urge in public offices is service. “I seek to touch your lives in a positive way, so that you will smile again. By the end of this month, we will formally launch the All Peoples Congress (APC) South-East zone in Awka and we believe that it is the party that will make a difference here. APC will form the next government in Anambra State.”

Ngige, who enjoys the support of the masses because of his achievements during the three years he was in office as governor of the state, thanked the people for their support during his senatorial election and gave them gifts, including wrappers, blenders, food flasks and cash.

He promised to pay similar visit to the other five local government areas that make up the senatorial district in future. Presenting a brief report of his scorecard, which was published in a booklet, Ngige said over 70 persons were given jobs in the senior cadre through him while about 30 were put in Power Institute.

He disclosed that soon, there would be distribution of transformers that he successfully included in the 2013 budget, which would go round at about three for each town. Earlier, speaker after speaker at the event urged Dr Ngige to throw his hat in the ring to liberate the poor masses in the state who have suffered tremendously.

In his speech, the member representing the Federal constituency, Charles Odedo, urged the those not be deceived by people who tell them that they have no place in APC, stressing that Ngige is one of the members of Board of Trustees.
